Hi, I’m Riya, a visual Journalist based in Chennai, India.
I am Riya Mariyam R, a visual journalist, photographer, and videographer based in Chennai, India. Through my work, I aim to document everyday life and bring attention to stories related to human experiences, women's issues, environmental concerns, civic issues, and current affairs.
My photographs have been published by media organisations including Reuters, Getty Images, BBC, The Guardian, NurPhoto, The New Indian Express, and Adyar Times.
As a freelance Visual Journalist, I have covered news events, election campaigns, public ceremonies, and cultural events. In my role as a video journalist at Adyar Times, I have worked on producing and editing more than 200 videos covering local events, human-interest stories, environmental concerns, and civic issues. These videos have collectively received over 2 million views, reaching an audience of more than 55K followers across social media platforms. I also began my journey in visual journalism as an intern at The New Indian Express.
I hold a Diploma in Visual Communication from Loyola College, Chennai, a B.Sc. in Computer Science from SRM University, and an online certificate in Photojournalism from SWAYAM. I was a finalist in the Women's Photography Competition organised by the Chennai Press Club, and my work has been exhibited at the Women's Journalist Conclave in Trivandrum.
My work involves photography, videography, and video editing using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, and Canva. I continue to learn and grow through every assignment, hoping to tell stories with honesty, care, and sensitivity.
